Shampoo and Conditioner Bars - Frequently asked questions

Switching to Zero Waste Shampoo Bars and Conditioner Bars

What is a shampoo bar and conditioner bar?

Shampoo bars, and conditioner bars are solid, concentrated active ingredients to be used to cleanse and condition hair.

Why should I make the switch from regular shampoo and conditioner?

Shampoo bars and conditioner bars are more sustainable than their bottled counterparts. Did you know that only 9% of the 3 million tonnes of plastic waste used by Canadians is recycled every year, with the remaining ending up in our environment and landfills. How do I use them?

To use a Shampoo Bar: Run the bar through wet hair at the scalp; massage/lather, and rinse.

To use a Conditioner Bar: Glide the bar through the ends of wet hair, leave on for a minute or two, the rinse.

How can I tell the shampoo bar and conditioner bar apart once they're out of the packaging?

We make our shampoo bars square, and our conditioner bars circle. So always remember "S"hampoo = square, "C"onditioner = circle

Our shampoo bars also lather, while our conditioner bars do not.

Are shampoo bars and conditioner bars safe for coloured/treated hair?

Our shampoo bars and conditioner bars are sulphate-free and pH balanced, so they are safe for use on coloured/treated hair.

You've tried shampoo bars before, and they left your hair feeling greasy and limp, what makes Lemongrass & Lavender bars different?

Some companies market hair soap as "shampoo bars,' though soap should not be used on hair for most people.

Rarely, some hair types tolerate the high pH levels of hair soap, whereas most hair types don't. The reason is this, soap/hair soap has a pH of around 9-10, but the best pH level for hair is around 5.

Higher pH levels can cause the cuticle of your hair to lift, making hair frizzy and prone to damage.

Our shampoo bars are made with plant-derived detergents which are pH balanced for healthy, shiny, manageable hair.

How do I store shampoo bars and conditioner bars in my shower/bath?

You'll want to have your shampoo bars and conditioner bars out of any standing water or direct shower spray to prevent the product from disintegrating prematurely. We have Soap Trays and Loofah Rounds available for purchase on our website, which allow for proper ventilation of the bars between usage. If you have a metal wire shelf in your shower, this is acceptable storage too.

How long do shampoo bars and conditioner bars last?

When stored properly, shampoo bars generally last about 45-50 shampoos, which is about the equivalent to a bottle and a half of a regular size shampoo bottle. Conditioner bars last a little bit longer, as you don't need quite as much product to condition your hair.

Bottom line, Shampoo bars and Conditioner bars are an easy eco-friendly switch. Let's make simple changes to help our Earth become a little greener.
